Year 5 took part in two exciting science experiments exploring how different substances react when mixed together.
First, the children mixed vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. This caused lots of fizzing and bubbles because the two substances reacted to form a new substance – a gas called carbon dioxide. They learnt that this was a chemical reaction, where new substances are made.
Next, the children experimented with coke and mentos. This time there was an impressive fountain, but no new substance was created. Instead, the mentos caused the gas already dissolved in the coke to be released very quickly. They discovered that this was a physical reaction, not a chemical one as the original substances were still there.
The children loved taking part in the experiment and were highly engaged throughout. They were keen to discuss what they observed and enjoyed applying their scientific knowledge to explain what was happening. A great example of learning through hands-on investigation!
