Virtual Open Event 2021

We hope you enjoy the virtual tour of our school.
This was made with some of our Year 6 children, completely unrehearsed and all their own ideas! They have tried to come up with lots of questions and answers that a Year 2 child may want to know.

Year 2 to Year 3 Transition (For September 2021)

Advice from Hampshire Admissions

Parents of Year 2 children in an Infant school must apply for a junior school place for transfer into Year 3 in September 2021. The application window opens on 01 November 2020 and closes at midnight on Friday 15 January 2021. It is very important that you submit your junior school application between these dates. If your application is received AFTER 15 January 2021, it will not be dealt with until all on-time applications have been processed and it is likely that the places at your preferred schools will already have been filled by on-time applicants.

Your child attends North/South Farnborough Infant School. There are two junior schools local to your child’s Infant school: St Peter’s CE Junior and South Farnborough Junior It is recommended that you find out about both of these schools by making contact with them, and/or visiting their websites so that you understand their provision for children in Key Stage 2 (Year 3– 6).

On your junior school application, you are invited to name your three preferred schools in your preference order. Use your preferences wisely. Ensure that you name more than one junior school on your form. It is risky to name only one school because if that school is over-subscribed with applications and yours is refused , you will be allocated a place at the nearest school with a space remaining, which could be some distance from your home.

All children living in the catchment areas for South Farnborough and North Farnborough Infant Schools have catchment priority at South Farnborough Junior School. This means that South Farnborough Junior School is usually oversubscribed with applications from catchment families and some children in catchment will inevitably be refused admission. (Only those catchment children with a sibling attending the infant or junior school and those living closest to the school are usually offered a place at South Farnborough Junior.) Consequently, the best way to increase your chances of a local school place is to name both St Peter’s and South Farnborough as two of the three schools amongst your preferences. The County Council has met with the schools several times and we are confident that we can ensure there are enough places across St Peter’s and South Farnborough for September 2021 to meet the demand from catchment families.

The order of your preferences should be truly based on how you like the schools, i.e. put your first ‘choice’ school as first and second as second etc. All applications are looked at without considering if the school was named as first, second or third preference. If two schools can offer a place, e.g. the first and third preference, the local authority always offers the highest named preference when more than one school can offer.

The Hampshire County Council website offers some advice ( and you can get help from the two junior schools and your infant school.

Can we visit South Farnborough Junior School before applying?

Normally we would invite parents/carers and children to visit our school.  However, due to current restrictions, we are unable to offer face to face open events at this time. Please take a look at our virtual tour above, if you have not already done so.

How is the transition managed?

Due to current lockdown measures, some of these planned events may, unfortunately, be unable to take place. We will keep this page updated with the most up to date information as soon as we have it.

In a normal year..

  • Staff visit the children at their infant schools to tell them a little bit about South Farnborough and answer any questions they may have.
  • Induction day where Year 2 children spend the day in their new classes with their new teacher.
  • A meeting between Year 2 and Year 3 teachers to share relevant information regarding the children e.g. strengths and areas for development.
  • Special Educational Needs meeting between the SENDCo of each school to ensure continued support.
  • Parents Evening in the Summer Term – see your child’s new classroom, meet their teacher, purchase uniform and find out information about the school.
  • An additional Parent's Evening held in September to discuss the curriculum your child will be covering in Year 3 as well as tips on how you can support them as they start KS2.

How do I apply for an in-year admission?

An in-year admission is when a child needs an immediate school place during the school year.

There are two main reasons for this. You might be moving house or unhappy with your child’s current school.

You can apply for an in-year place up to four weeks before the place is needed. Exceptionally, parents seeking an in-year place starting in September 2021 can apply from May 2021. These applications will be considered from June 2021 (exact date TBC).

To make an application, you may do so online via the Hampshire County Council website or contact the school for a paper copy, applications will then be processed by County admissions.

Once received by the school, you will be notified in writing of the outcome and either be offered a place if there is one available or placed on a waiting list.
