“Embracing our values today… to be a successful part of the world tomorrow!”

The Intent, Implementation and Impact of our Music Curriculum.

Every child has the right to a broad, balanced and rich education. At South Farnborough, we believe that every child should have the chance to enjoy their learning and be successful. If we do not provide a variety of opportunities for our children to explore different skills and disciplines, they will never know what they are completely capable of.

At the heart of South Farnborough is our school values, as chosen by the children, you can see them shining through our Music curriculum. Our values Pride and Excellence are able to be seen through allowing the children to perform and compose their own music. One of our values is creativity and music provides children with an opportunity for self-expression and imagination. This is an area where all children, no matter their background, have to opportunity to excel. Through the medium of music, children can explore the world through different cultures and traditions and learn through a shared world language, whilst developing skills such as resilience. By allowing the children to hear and observe music performances, live or recorded, their empathy skills become essential to consider their own and others’ feelings throughout a piece of music.

At South Farnborough, Music is taught regularly, both in and out of class. In class, children explore a variety of musical forms and techniques from around the world. Throughout their lessons, they have the opportunity to listen to, analyse, practise and create different styles of music. Within this, they learn about different cultures and the importance of music in other areas, such as religion.

Outside of lessons, music is taught through singing assemblies every two weeks, in other areas of the curriculum and in productions. Every child will have the opportunity to take part in these events in addition to extra-curricular clubs:

  • Class assemblies
  • Lower School Nativity
  • Upper School Carol Concert
  • Year 6 production
  • Composition club

Having fantastic role models for the children to look up to is essential. At South Farnborough, children have access to a wide selection of Peripatetic lessons with skilled and highly enthusiastic teachers, where children are able to learn:

  • Keyboard
  • Drums
  • Guitar
  • Violin
  • Woodwind

In lessons, children can explore a variety of musical resources and work individually and as part of a team to create, discuss and explore different musical pieces.

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing of all children at South Farnborough, not only through the skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines music promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful, you need to take ownership and responsibility by having patience, resilience and dedication. Our impact is, therefore, to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills, whilst developing their creativity and understanding of different cultures.

By the end of their time with us, all children should have achieved the National Curriculum objectives:

  • Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
  • Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music
  • Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
  • Use and understand staff and other musical notations
  • Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
  • Develop an understanding of the history of music.
